- False Killer Whale Field work
- Description
- The State Procurement Office (SPO) is requesting proposals for contracted field-work in cooperation with the Division of Aquatic Resources (DAR), to begin a study to support cooperative conservation and long-term management of false killer whales and other ESA listed species in Hawaii. This contract will enhance State efforts to minimize and mitigate incidental take of false killer whales through field surveys, biological sampling, spatial and temporal analysis of the overlap between fisheries and false killer whales, stranding response support, and targeted outreach efforts.
Data on False Killer Whales will be collected in order to research their biology, health and populations temporal and spatial use patterns. Research will include; photo identification of individual FKW and obtaining of photos to assess fishery-related injuries. Aerial photographs that will be matched to known individuals will be obtained (through simultaneous boat-based photo-identification), and will be used for detailed photogrammetry. Body length and other body dimensions, are needed to assign individuals to age class, assess body condition (e.g., if animals are emaciated), and determine near-term pregnancies of known individuals. Breath samples will be collected for health assessment by analysis of the respiratory microbiome. Biopsy samples will be collected to allow for sex determination, examination of reproductive and stress hormone levels, blubber quality and levels of POPs, specifically targeting individuals for which a health, body length assessment, photogrammetry images and breath samples have been obtained.
Secondary objectives include obtaining information on other ESA-listed species in Hawaiian waters, including sei whales, fin whales, sperm whales, giant manta rays, oceanic whitetip sharks, scalloped hammerhead sharks, and offshore sea turtles (olive ridley, hawksbill, leatherback). While these species may only be infrequently encountered, opportunities to obtain photos for individual identification, genetic sampling (of whales and possibly others), and possibly deployment of tags to track movements. Any award will result in a contract for this study; results of study will be for use by NOAA fisheries and the Department of Land and Natural Resources.
