- Description
- The State Procurement Office (SPO) is requesting proposals for contracted necropsy, field and lab work in cooperation with the Division of Aquatic Resources (DAR), to begin a study to support cooperative conservation and long-term management of false killer whales and other ESA listed species in Hawaii. This contract will enhance State efforts to minimize and mitigate incidental take of false killer whales through conducting stranding investigations that include screening for infectious diseases and examination of anthropogenic impacts and targeted outreach efforts.
This project will identify and evaluate threats to endangered false killer whales, sperm whales, sei whales, fin whales humpback whales and other endangered species by conducting stranding investigations that include screening for infectious diseases and examination of anthropogenic impacts. Additionally analyzing blubber samples from stranded and live animals (That will be collected by a different field work effort contract) for blubber quality and stress and reproductive hormones. This project will also conduct strategic outreach to improve public reporting of strandings and thus stranding response and effectiveness.
